The Virginia Creeper Trail is a recreational trail (rails to trails) located in Southwest Virginia (SWVA). The Virginia Creeper stretches 34 miles from Abingdon, Virginia down through to the lovely town of Damascus, Va (known as the Heart of the Va Creeper) along the Whitetop Laurel River and up to its highest point Whitetop Station near the NC State Line at Whitetop, Virginia. The Va Creeper Trail is open year round for trail runs, hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. This former rail bed passes through the Mount Rogers National Recreation area and the highland country of southwest Virginia. The Virginia Creeper Trail is rich in beauty and regional history. This is an easy biking adventure that you, your friends, and family will talk about for a long time. Start at one of the Creeper Trails bike shops in Damascus for a bike rental and shuttle services to the top and take a leisurely ride downhill 17 miles to town. On this section of the trail (Whitetop to Damascus) you will ride your rental bike from Whitetop Station down to historic Green Cove Station. Then travel through the Jefferson National Forest to the community of Taylors Valley along the Laurel River (watch out for the trout in the stream) back to Damascus. Then grab a bite at one of our tasty local restaurants, pick up a few t-shirts and souvenirs, and spend the night in one of our towns comfy beds. You will love it here!

The creek side location with popular swim area and lush forest surroundings make Backbone Rock Campground particularly desirable during hot summer months. With 10 campsites and an adjacent large Civilian Conservation Corps- built reservable pavilion with lawn, Backbone Rock is a great option for a group to reserve the whole campground for retreats and other events.
GSM National Park-42.9 Miles-3 Sections
The Foothills Parkway 339 motorcycle ride is a thrilling journey through the picturesque foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. Riders can expect sweeping curves, breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, a perfect balance of challenging twists and turns, combined with serene natural beauty. The finished highways of the Foothills Parkway are divided into four parts. Each part that is completed is some of the most beautiful landscapes in all four seasons and worth the effort in making it a worthwhile ride. The Western Segment is 33 miles at the southern portion of the parkway from US129 in Chilhowee TN to US 321 in Wears Valley TN. This section can be easily accessed after taking the US129DragonsTail.com or “Tail of the Dragon” motorcycle ride. The Eastern Segment is 5.6 miles at the most northern portion and can be accessed from Interstate I-40 from Hartford TN traveling towards Cosby TN. The third segment completed they call the “Foothills Parkway Spur” which is 4.3 miles long and starts in Gatlinburg and ends in Pigeon Forge. The remainder, “Missing Link” section is still being constructed. The Foothills Parkway 339 motorcycle ride promises an unforgettable experience for all who embark on it. There are a few switchbacks that are easy to navigate due to the national park speed limit. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is among the most visited national parks in the world! The route goes through many altitude changes and offers plenty of striking views. As you travel down the road, you’ll find plenty of scenic pullouts that provide beautiful sights of the mountains. We are snuggled between three mountains at an elevation of 3,000 feet and just 2 1/2 miles from the crossroads US 421 and 91/133.
Take a leisurely ride on any of the roads leading out of Shady Valley or gather with a group and ride “the snake ” . There are 489 curves within a 12 mile radius of the crossroads.
Want to make this a family or group outing? There are various attractions available in the area. White water rafting, hiking on the AT, antique shopping, theaters, caverns, bicycling the creeper trail and many more activity’s within a days adventure.
